Potter’s House Christian Church members in South Africa, put it there to spread the gospel to residents of a town in the Western Cape – urging them to embrace God immediately or face death.
Speaking on why they took such a drastic approach to preaching, 28-year-old church member Aphiwe Nqevu, who is a former drug dealer and convict that became born again in 2009, said:
We brought the coffin to illustrate to people who fail to embrace Jesus as the son of God that they will go to hell and face eternal death. Those who believe in Him will live a glorious life of eternity in heaven when they die.We use the coffin to urge people to embrace God. Once death occurs, it is too late to decide. Everybody is going to die, so let’s find Jesus.People should understand that whether they are rich or poor or black or white – the same fate awaits them and that is death.
The Pastor of the church, Randall van Staden, said members use theatre, music and the coffin to spread the gospel in towns within the Western Cape.
But not everybody thought the coffin was a good idea. Some women ran away in fear.
A bus driver, Zilindile Mthana, 74, said it was disrespectful. “Coffins are linked to funerals – a sacred thing in our African culture,” he said.
